A pilgrim at home: Part 3

September 23, 2023

Here in the Spanish region of Valencia in 2023 we have been celebrating the centenary of the death of the impressionist painter Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923). Sorolla was a great master of light and his paintings were often informed by photography, as his first job was lighting assistant to a photographer in Valencia. He … More A pilgrim at home: Part 3

The Flight into Romanesque

December 19, 2020

Day 35 of Walking Out of the World: flying over the Romanesque in Chauvigny and Saint-Savin. Linear time and the aeroplane as a figure of the ship of the Church. (Previous post: Day 34 Walking with donkey to L’Isle-de-Jourdain.) Having earned my donkey wings and attached them to my pilgrim rucsack, there remained one more … More The Flight into Romanesque

Paginas de historia de la raza asnal andaluza: esto es un proyecto vivo y en preparación. No hay conclusiones y solamente presentó unos datos, bibliografía, metodología, etc. Abierto a correcciones y comentarios. Este trabajo lo dedico a mi burra Matilde, por amor de su familia y a la memoria de Chavela de Kike.

Scenes from the past 15 years. I have four donkeys, Matilde the Andalusian grey dapple, Aitana her daughter, and two other mestizo brown donkeys, Rubi and Morris.

Life with donkeys (2010 – 2025)

The equusasinus.net blog was launched ten years ago. The scallop shell is the symbol of pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James and it was during my walk from UK to Santiago de Compostela 18 years ago that donkeys came into my life. I met the donks of my friend Barbara while walking through France and Matilde my Andalusian was born here in Spain that same week! But it would be two and a half years until I met her!

The Camino can change your life.

June 2026: it is ten years since we bought our new home in Orxeta, and after visiting the village to use the local shops I was told by a man from the town hall - sent by the mayor - to take my donkeys out of the village and never bring them in again, or face a denuncia. We never went to the village again. Looking forward to a new life in Andalucia and a better welcome for the donkeys!
